Abstract:
Background: Due to the lack of information about the role of ۴G/۵G polymorphism of PAI-۱ Gene in susceptibility to thyroid tumors, this study was performed to evaluate the potential effects of this polymorphism on clinicopathologic features of thyroid tumors in Iranian Azeri Turkish patients. Methods:In this case-control study, ۹۰ patients with thyroid tumors who were not blood relatives and their PAI-۱ ۴G/۵G polymorphism had been determined in the previous study, were included. Results: All clinicopathologic features of thyroid tumor related to PAI-۱ ۴G/۵G polymorphism that affect the severity of disease were studied. The results show that T۱ tumor size (۴G/۴G, P = ۰.۰۱۹; ۴G/۵G, P = ۰.۰۲۱) in patients with/without these features was significantly different. Conclusion: Data showed a protective role for ۴G allele versus ۵G and ۴G/۴G versus ۵G/۵G against the development of thyroid tumors in Azeri Turkish ethnic group.
