Abstract:
The aim of this study is the identification of parameters of initiating, strengthening or weakening of vortices in fluid flows. In this paper, initiation of vortices and their dynamic behavior in a liquid filled tank moving on a circular path have been investigated. An experimental apparatus has been designed and constructed for investigating the effects of the radius of the circular path and the angular velocity of the tank on initiation and dynamic behavior of vortices. Colored fine grains are used for visualization of the liquid flow inside the tank and a high-speed video camera has been employed for taking experimental videos and shots. Effects of acceleration and deceleration of the tank on its circular path on initiation and dynamic behavior of vortices have also been considered and taken into account. It is found that increasing the radius of the circular path of the tank results in increasing of strength of the liquid vortices generated inside the tank. It is also found that the liquid vortices are initiated and strengthened when the tank is accelerated on its circular path. While deceleration of the tank on its circular path results in weakening of the vortices inside the tank.
