Abstract:
Titanium is a low-density element with excellent mechanical properties, and is an attractive material for structural and biomedical applications. Among powder metallurgy techniques, rapid manufacturing routes at relatively low temperatures, such as spark plasma sintering (SPS) process, which involve the simultaneous application of pressure and temperature, result in titanium engineering components with higher relative density and good mechanical properties, compared to the conventional sintering methods. In the present work, the use of SPS on commercial purity titanium was investigated. Sintering experiments were conducted in the temperature range ۹۵۰–۱۲۵۰℃ for ۵ min, under a uniaxial pressure of ۳۰ MPa, in vacuum. Samples obtained at different temperatures were characterized in term of density, hardness, tensile properties. This paper shows that good mechanical properties can be obtained by SPS technique when CP-Ti powders are sintered at very low temperature during a short period in contrast to conventional fabrication techniques
