Abstract:

Background: Pain on injection is a limitation with propofol use. Therefore, it is important to lower the pain oninjection of Propofol in patients undergoing anesthesia. As a result, the current study was conducted in orderto compare the effects of lidocaine, lidocaine and the Valsalva maneuver, and the Valsalva maneuver ondecreasing the pain of Propofol injection.methods: This study is a clinical trial with ۱۱۱ patients. The patients were allocated into ۳ groups with onegroup receiving lidocaine, the second group receiving lidocaine and the Valsalva maneuver, and Valsalvamaneuver. The pain resulting from injecting Propofol based upon the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score wereanalyzed using the Mann Whitney U test. A P value of <۰.۰۵ was considered significant. To compare themeans between or within independent groups, the independent samples t-test or the one-way ANOVA testwas used. The chi-square test or the Fisher's exact test were used to compare proportions as appropriate. Weused theSPSS ۲۳.۰ statistical software package for all analyses. Results: The mean pain score in the combination group of lidocaine and Valsalva maneuver was lower thanthe other two groups and was equal to ۰.۵ ± ۰.۳۳. In addition, the mean pain scores in the lidocaine group andthe Valsalva maneuver group were ۴.۶ ± ۱.۴۱ and۷.۸۱±۱/۹۱, respectively. The mean pain intensity in the agegroups and the sexes did not show a significant difference with each other. Conclusion: The current study showed that the injection of Propofol in the three groups of the study wasreduced in a similar fashion, however in the group which combined lidocaine, Valsalva and the Valsalvamaneuver, pain was lowest, but the overall score in the three groups was not statistically different.
