A comparative study on the performance of two full scale integrated biological systems (UASB-AS and ABFAS)treating an industrial estate wastewater abstract

In this study, the performance of two full scale integrated system viz. UASB-AS (A-with design capacity of 300 m3/d) and ABF-AS (B-with design capacity of 600 m3/d) systems that treatingFaraman’s industrial estate wastewater (FIW) was compared in a 3.5-year period. The UASB-ASand BF-AS have been designed based on 300 and 600 m3/d, respectively. The process performancewas analyzed by measuring COD and TSS concentrations at influent and effluent of eachoperational unit. The ranges of organic loading rates (OLRs) applied for the UASB and ABF reactors were in the range of 0.31-10.95 and 0.18-9.5 gCOD/l.d, respectively. Mean values forCOD removal efficiencies were 33.1 and 38.2 % in UASB and ABF, respectively. Average TSSremoval of 43.9 and 48.7 % were obtained for UASB and ABF reactors, respectively. As a result, a similar and low performance was obtained for both anaerobic systems. For activated sludgereactors (A and B), mean values for COD removal efficiencies were 80.4 and 86.7 %, respectively. Average values of specific substrate utilization rate were determined to be 0.107 and 0.051 g CODrem/g VSS.d, respectively for systems A and B. Apart from the U value, both activated sludge systems showed a similar performance in terms of COD removal (with OLRrem/OLRin ratio of 0.85).
