First record of Anisakis sp. third stage larvae (Nematoda) occurrence in Pacific Jack Mackerel from a fish processing and packaging plant in the North of Iran

Abstract:

Purpose: This research was performed with the aim of hygienic tracking for fishborne parasitic contamination imported by Jack mackerel fish from certain parts ofthe world in a fish processing unit during a health inspection in the North region ofIran in the summer of the year ۲۰۱۹.Methods: A sample of ۱۵۰ jack mackerel fish specimens was selected at random.All the fish had the same length and weight sizes at average measures of ۵۳.۶ cmand ۲.۰۴ kg. The cysts consisting of robust parasites seen on mesentery andmuscles were then remove larval from their locality and placed in small glass jarscontaining ۱۰% formalin and transferred to the lab.Results: A total of ۱۰۰% of Jack Mackerel (Trachurus symmetricus) fish cargo, asa portion of human food, imported from New Zealand were severely contaminatedwith Anisakis sp. worm parasite. The parasite intensity ranges were between ۲۵and ۷۰ individuals per fish, and the total of parasites was ۷۱۲۵ individuals. Themean intensity was reached up to ۴۷.۵. The encysted parasite specimens wereobserved in the muscles, mesentery and peritoneum of viscera around theabdominal cavity of mackerel whereas seeing as twisted third stage larvae.Conclusion: As an aspect of human sanitary, Anisakis species due to beingzoonoses has significant important. For this reason, people should avoid consumingraw or semi-cooked marine fish. The present study is the first available report ofAnisakis sp. contamination in Jack mackerel imported to Iran.
