Therapeutic Intervention for Caseous Lymphadenitis Using Intra-abscess Instillation of Ozone or Hydrogen Peroxide in Small Ruminants

CLA is an economically and zoonotically important disease in the world. The lack of a therapeutic procedure limits the treatment mainly to surgical intervention. Therapeutic efficacies of the intra-abscess instillation of O۳-oil and H۲O۲-gly in CLA in small ruminants were tested. One hundred eighty affected sheep and goats were allocated to five groups as follows: ۱) NC (no intervention), ۲) PC۱ (injection of olive oil), ۳) PC۲ (injection of glycerin), ۴) injection of O۳-oil, ۵) injection of H۲O۲-gly. Samples of abscess contents were collected for microbiological examination prior to injection. The VAs were measured on T۰, then with two-week intervals on T۱ and T۲. On T۰ and T۲, VAs were as NC (۲.۹ ± ۰.۵; ۳.۵ ± ۰.۵), PC۱ (۳.۴ ± ۰.۷; ۶.۶ ± ۱), PC۲ (۳.۱ ± ۰.۷; ۳.۳ ± ۰.۹), O۳-oil (۳.۳ ± ۰.۴; ۰.۴ ± ۰.۴), and H۲O۲-gly (۴.۶ ± ۰.۴, ۱.۵ ± ۰.۴). Statistical analysis showed a significant decrease in VAs, merely in treatment groups. CP was recovered in ۴۸.۳% of bacteriological samples. The results of this study suggested that O۳-oil and H۲O۲-gly would be reliable therapeutic agents for treating and controlling CLA. Ozone showed apparently a higher  efficacy and caused more rapid shrinkage/recession of the abscesses, compared to hydrogen peroxide..
