Achieving a globular microstructure before conducting semi-solid forming (SSF) techniques has a great influence on final properties. In this research Al2014 alloy with a globular microstructure was producedvia new strain induced melt activation (SIMA) process. In order to study the effect of pre-deformation in the SIMA process, various height reduction percentages (HR%) (10%, 20% and 30%) were applied on specimens through cold upsetting. Cold worked specimens were heat treated up to 635 oC, for 30 minutesand then quenched in cold water. Observation with optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)showed that by increasing the height reduction percentage, average grain size decreases significantly.Further results showed that with increasing height reduction percentage, sphericity increases to some extent
