Effects of Thyme and Rosemary essential oils on population growth parameters of Macrosiphum rosae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on cut flower rose

Abstract:

The effect of thyme Thymus vulgaris L. androsemary Rosmarinus officinalis (L.) essential oils on life table parameters of red rose aphid Macrosiphum rosae (L.) oncut flower rose Rosa hybrida L. were investigated in laboratory conditions (۲۷ ± ۲ oC, ۷۰ ± ۵% humidity and a photoperiod of ۱۶L:۸Dh), during ۲۰۱۴-۲۰۱۵. The results on the basis of LC۵۰ values showed that the M. rosae was significantly more sensitive to the oil of T. vulgaris (LC۵۰ = ۳۶۶۲۱ ppm) than R. officinalis (LC۵۰ = ۵۷۵۶۵ ppm). Also, Investigation of the thyme essential oil on life table parameters of M. rosae showed that the net reproductive rate (R۰) values changed from ۱۶.۶۲ ± ۲.۳۱ to ۲۹.۱۰ ± ۱.۹۷ female offspring, the intrinsic rate of increase (r) values ranged from ۰.۱۷۷ ± ۰.۰۱ to ۰.۲۲۹ ± ۰.۱۳ day-۱, the mean generation time (T) was ۱۳.۹۲ ± ۰.۲۲ to ۱۵.۸۸ ± ۰.۱۹ days, the DT values ranged from ۳.۰۱ ± ۰.۰۵ to ۳.۹۰ ± ۰.۰۰۷ days and the finite rate of increase (λ) values was ۱.۱۹ ± ۰.۰۰۳ to ۱.۲۶ ± ۰.۰۶ day-۱. Also, the rosemary essential oil on life table parameters of red rose aphid revealed that the R۰ values ranged from ۱۷.۸۷ ± ۱.۹۷ to ۳۱.۹۷ ± ۱.۹۸ female offspring,the r values ranged from ۰.۱۸۵ ± ۰.۰۲ to ۰.۲۳۷ ± ۰.۰۰۱ day-۱, the mean generation time (T) was ۱۴.۴۵ ± ۰.۲۳ to ۱۵.۹۹ ± ۰.۲۱ days, the DT ranged from ۲.۸۵ ± ۰.۱۴ to ۳.۷۱ ± ۰.۱۴ days and the λ values was ۱.۲۰ ± ۰.۰۱ to ۱.۲۷ ± ۰.۰۲ day-۱.The results revealed that the essential oils of rosemary and thyme used in this research had a significant difference on population parameters of rose aphid. The maximum mortality percent of M. rosae population registered ۸۶.۱۲ ± ۱.۰۲% and ۹۰.۲۱ ± ۱.۱۲% for rosemary and thyme essential oils, respectively. Hence, T. vulgaris had higher insecticidal effect than R. officinalis essential oil on rose aphid population.
