Substance abuse has been a chronic issue that poses significant concerns to public health, societal wellbeing, and law enforcement. Previous research has suggested that substance abuse often directly impacts the nervous system, potentially leading to the escalation of criminal behavior. While several studies have begun to shed light on the direct neurophysiological effects of substance abuse (Jones, 2018; White, 2019), comprehensive analysis linking these alterations to escalated criminal behavior is somewhat sparse. This literature review aims to bring together the current body of knowledge to illuminate the underlying mechanisms driving this complex relationship
