Abstract:

Introduction: One of the most important changes that many countries are currently facing or will experience in the near future is the increase in the elderly population. Mental disorders are the main cause of disability and the burden of diseases throughout life. that their prevalence is increasing in the elderly. Depression is one of these disorders. Considering the negative effects of depression in the lives of the elderly (such as difficulty in sleeping and making decisions, etc.) and that the elderly directly use about ninety percent of nursing services they receive ،The aim of the present study is to review nursing interventions in reducing depression in elderly patients.Material and Methods: In this review study, keywords related to depression, elderly patients and nursing were searched in reliable scientific databases (Google Scholar, Pub Med, Science Direct, Wiley Online Library) in the period since ۲۰۱۶ to ۲۰۲۱ and fifteen articles were found because of lack of access to full texts and insufficient relevance to the topic only ten numbers of them were selected and reviewe.Results: Considering the role of nurses in caring for the elderly, nurses can strengthen their role as providers of mental health care in long-term care of the elderly. Social support in the treatment of depression, medication management and various health care management strategies, all provide solutions for depressed elderly that nurses play an imporyant role Also, by changing the attitude of nurses towards depression and the elderly, the quality of care for the elderly can be increased.Conclution: Based on the studies, we conclude that by improving the attitude of nurses and improving the quality of nursing services, creating a happy environment, the symptoms of depression in the elderly have decreased
