Abstract:

Introduction: Chronic kidney failure and hemodialysis cause major changes in the lifestyle of the elderly, which affects their quality of life. Patient education is an important part of modern health care and a factor in improving the quality of life in the elderly. Education can improve the quality of life of the elderly by increasing the knowledge of caring for the elderly and their families. The present study was conducted in order to determine the effect of education on the quality of life of hemodialysis elderly in Shiraz city.Material and Methods: This research was conducted as a semi-experimental on ۲۰ elderly people with renal failure who were selected by simple random method. The data collection tool was a questionnaire consisting of demographic information and level of awareness about how to take care of oneself and a quality of life measurement tool SF۳۶. The awareness measurement tool was self-made and its validity was determined by the content validity method and its reliability was determined by Cronbach's alpha=۷۸%. ۳۶ SF quality of life measuring tool in the first stage (before the intervention), the questionnaire was completed in the form of face-to-face interview, and after determining the training needs and developing a self-care training program based on Orem's self-care model, with the consultation of kidney and nutrition specialists, face-to-face training was conducted. It was conducted for the elderly in ۴ one-hour sessions during three weeks. After three months from the last day of training, the questionnaire was completed again by the researcher and colleagues in the form of face-to-face interviews and analyzed by SPSS software using descriptive statistics and paired T-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and analysis of variance.Result: According to the significance level (p<۰.۰۰۱), the results showed a significant relationship between the average score obtained from quality of life before and after training and the level of awareness related to self-care before and after training (p<۰.۰۰۱) so that The average quality of life score increased from ۳۰.۵ before to ۴۰.۲ after and the average awareness level increased from ۵.۲ before to ۱۲.۷ after the training. Self-care training resulted in significant improvement in general health levels, physical performance, energy level, mental health, and overall perception of health.Conclusion: According to the results of the research, providing appropriate training in hemodialysis departments can improve the level of energy, general health, physical performance, mental health, and ultimately the general understanding of health, and as a result, increase the overall quality of life in patients by raising the level of awareness.
