Abstract:

Background & Objectives: Ferulago angulata is one of the most important herbs used in the traditional medicine for the treatment of skin wounds in the region of Golbaf located in Kerman, Iran. This study aimed to compare the effects of ferulago angulata hydro-alcoholic extract and ۱% phenytoin cream on skin ulcers. Materials & Methods: In this experimental study, ۲۰ male mice were divided into ۴ groups of control, recipi-ents of ۱% phenytoin cream and recipients of hydro-alcoholic extract of ferulago angulata (۱۰ and ۱۰۰ mg/ ml). The compounds were applied to skin wounds with diameter of ۷.۸۵ mm. Phenytoin cream was applied on the wounds of each subject at doses of ۱۰ and ۱۰۰ mg/ml for ۱۸ days, and the control group received saline serum. Level of wound healing was measured at days ۳, ۶, ۹, ۱۲ and ۱۴, and the total recovery time for each skin wound was calculated as well. Results: Mean of wound severity was determined at days ۱۲ and ۱۴, and recipients of the extract in both groups had a significant difference with the control group (P<۰.۰۵). Differences in wound healing in the phenytoin group and recipients of ۱۰ and ۱۰۰ mg/kg extract were ۱.۵۸ days, ۳ days and ۴.۱۳ days, respectively. In addition, there was a significant difference in wound recovery at days ۹ and ۱۲ between the phenytoin group and recipients of ۱۰۰ mg/ml of the extract (P<۰.۰۵). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, hydro-alcoholic extract of ferulago angulata had a more signifi-cant effect on wound healing compared to phenytoin cream.
