Abstract:
Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that particularly affects the elderly populationand accounts for more than two-thirds of dementia cases in the world. This disease is a majorglobal health challenge that may lead to high health costs. Age, environment, and genetic factors, along with the accumulation of senile plaques and fibrillary tangles, are responsible for thepathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, which leads to mitochondrial dysfunction in energyproduction. The release of oxidizing free radicals also causes oxidative damage. According to theneuroinflammation theory proposed for the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, microgliainflammation appears before brain damage. Studies conducted in the brains of Alzheimer'spatients show that complement molecules, pro-inflammatory cytokines, acute phase reactants andother inflammatory mediators that can play a role in the neurodegeneration process are increased. In this review, articles related to inflammatory factors in Alzheimer's disease have beeninvestigated. Finally, further studies are needed to determine whether treatment with antiinflammatorystrategies may reduce the neurodegenerative processes affecting these patients.
