Abstract:

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurological disorder associated withabnormal protein modification, inflammation, and memory impairment.Amyloid beta and phosphorylated tau proteins are medical diagnosticfeatures. Various reports associate the progression of the disease with adecrease in the activity of cholinergic neurons in the brain. Theneurotrophic molecule, nerve growth factor, plays an important role inmaintaining the integrity and function of cholinergic neurons, both duringdevelopment and in adulthood. Numerous studies have also shown thatnerve growth factor contributes to the survival and regeneration of neuronsduring aging and in age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.Progressive dysregulation of neurotrophic factors such as nerve growthfactor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor has been reported duringdisease progression, thus further research targeting these factors asdiseasemodifying therapies against the disease has intensified. Effectivelong-term treatment to reduce cognitive impairment is a major unmet need.In summary, the purpose of this review is to describe the availableexperimental and clinical data related to the treatment of Alzheimer'sdisease, to obtain facts related to the importance of nerve growth factor fortreatment.
