Assessment of Damping Effects on the Displacement Based Design of Steel Braced Frames abstract
In this paper various effects of damping on the direct displacement based seismic design procedure have been quantified. The damping effects have been investigated in two different steps of the design procedure. At the first step, the obtained design spectra have been used in the displacement based seismic design of steel braced frames and the results have been compared to verify the effect of spectrum damping. The needed design displacement spectra have been prepared based on selected earthquake records of Iran with different viscous damping values. Numerical analyses have been performed for steel frames with concentric bracing systems for medium and high rise buildings. At the second step, the effect of damping in the calculation of the effective period and other effective parameters of the substitute structure has been investigated. The results have been obtained for different code force distributions.
