Evaluation of Noise Pollution Levels in Selected Markets and Motor Parks in Delta State, Nigeria

Background: The control of environmental noise pollution has been hampered by lack of sufficient knowledge of its effect on human. Noise pollution is associated with several health conditions and affects both health and behaviour. A study of the noise pollution level in selected market places and Motor Park in two Local Government Area in Delta State has been carried out.Methods: In September 2021, the physical measurement was carried out with the use of a digital sound level meter and a mobile phone GPS. Noise measurements were done in the Morning and in the evening; to determine noise pollution all over the city. The selected areas of study are market places, road junctions/busy roads and passenger loading parks. The noise pollution levels were obtained in Ogwashi-Uku market, Ogwashi-Uku Motor Park, Nwasi Motor Park, Ibusa market, Central motor park Asaba, Onitsha Park and Oko market Asaba.Results: The results shows that Their respective average pollution level in the morning hours are 89.33dB, 90.1dB, 90.3dB, 91.72dB, 86.59dB, 90.11dB, 92.15dB and 90.3dB while for evening period, the measured values are 83.65dB, 74.90dB, 90.04dB, 90.90dB, 85.07dB, 83.44dB and 91.79dB respectively. These values are observed to be higher than the FEPA and WHO standard limits for outdoor environment.Conclusion: Those working and living in these areas may be at risk of noise induced health hazard due to continuous daily exposure.
