Abstract:

The development of a combustion model for an open combustion chamber diesel engine is described in this paper. In the present model, the injected fuel spray is divided into a number of small packages. Gas and fuel droplet temperatures and evaporated mass rates of fuel in each package are computed. The heat release rate is computed from the fuel evaporation rate. The model which is based on the droplet evaporation technique is combined with a cycle simulation program for the compression, expansion, exhaust and intake. processes to predict the performance of a single cylinder direct injection diesel engine. A comparison of the computed data with that of the experimental results revealed the satisfactory predictive capability of the model.
