Survey of effectiveness of nitroglycerine ointment on onset of phlebitis due to peripheral catheterization in hospitalized patients at internal and surgical wards

This research is a quasi experimental study carried out in internal and surgical wards of ali ibn abitaleb hospital to assess the effectiveness of treatment of nitroglycerine ointment appearing on time of phlebitis due to peripheral catheterization.the subjects of this study were ۶۰ hospitalized patients at medical-surgical wards of the hospital,that were divided in two groups:control and test.these two groups were matched according ti their age,sex,and the amount of the serum received.after the placement of the catheter,nitroglycerin ointment(۲.۵mg) was placed in the distal section of the injection place and every ۱۲ hrs the site of cannulationwas examined for signs of phlebitis(warmth,pain,erythema,and swelling) by an independed observer.the given data were analyzed by a computer using paired t test.results indicates that time of appearance of phlebitis in the test group(۵۶.۷hrs)was longer than the control group(۴۱.۵hrs)(p<۰.۰۰۰۱).this result is indicative of the effect of nitroglycerine.also the time of appearance of phlebitis according to age,sex,and amount of serum received,showed a significant difference(p<۰.۰۵),in that the time of appearance of phlebitis was longer in young men (۱۸-۴۰ years old) and in persons receiving ۲<_liters of serum.
