Optimizing the Parameters of the Tuned Mass Damper Inerter to Reduce the Park-Ang Damage Index abstract
This paper explores the practical benefits of a Tuned Mass Damper Inerter (TMDI) over the classic Tuned Mass Damper (TMD). The focus is demonstrating that TMDI has a better damage index reduction capability due to its inertial amplifying effect. Moreover, the study also investigates the possibility of enhancing the inertial property of TMDI to improve its performance without adding mass to the damper. A 9-story building frame is considered for the nonlinear dynamic analysis. TMDI and TMD are designed using the centralized plasticity model and optimized through meta-heuristic algorithms, including the Harris hawk algorithm. The study results indicate that TMDI shows higher efficiency and effectiveness in reducing the damage index than TMD due to its inertial amplifier effect.
