Abstract:

One of the well-known effective methods for reducing earthquake risks is implementing seismic isolation. It is also required to isolate structures from the vertical excitations of earthquakes, especially in near fault aeras and for light structures. A proposed solution involves utilizing advanced materials to dissipate energy and to reduce stiffness. Vertical seismic isolation using metamaterials made of superelastic shape memory alloys has been evaluated by modeling the isolator with SolidWorks and simulating the behavior in ABAQUS software. The use of metamaterials made of superelastic shape memory alloys practically provides lateral stability (due to the negative Poisson's ratio of the metamaterial) and vertical restoring capability (due to the superelasticity of shape memory alloys and the cellular arrangement of the metamaterials). This innovative approach presents a more effective solution for seismic isolation
