The Role of Architecture in the Process of Moving Towards SustainableDevelopment: A Systematic Review

Introduction: Environmental, social, and cultural problems arose in the twentieth century asa result of acceleration of industrial growth of societies as well as economic inequalities. Lackof proper development patterns was the main factor demanding the introduction of the conceptof sustainable development in the second half of the twentieth century. The constructionindustry, particularly the residential construction sector, was one of the major factors of energyconsumption in the world. Therefore, inclusion of the issue of sustainable development in thisarea and coupling housing development policies with the goal of sustainable development wasof particular importance. In this regard, sustainability, as one of the most influential disciplinesin the field of architecture, played an important role in order to meet the objectives ofsustainable development. Aims: This paper reviewed the concepts of sustainable developmentand sustainable design, and addressed them in the field of architecture. Methods: The researchmethod was descriptive-analytic, based on library information, and extracted data from the casestudies. In this regard, the movements related to sustainable architecture have been categorizedand characteristics of a sustainable building in terms of sustainable development goals havebeen outlined. Conclusion: The results showed the importance of the architecture in theprocess of moving towards sustainability. Subsequently, an appropriate approach to meet thegoals of sustainability in architectural design has been developed and potentials of this processto achieve sustainability and The potential and role of governments to achieve a sustainabledevelopment process in architectural design have been mentioned.
