Abstract:

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) are environmentally persistent halogenated hydrocarbon,which have been widely used in many industrial and commercial applications. Recently, contaminating thesoil and groundwater due to ubiquity of PFAS in environments has raised great concern. Adsorptiontechnology is one of the most promising method for PFAS removal. Chitosan is a biopolymer substancewith abundant amine and hydroxyl functional groups, which render it as a good adsorbent. This study, hastried to enhance the adsorption capacity of chitosan by grafting more amine functional groups on its surfacefor removal of two long (PFOA, and PFOS) and two short-chain (PFBA, PFBS) PFAS substances fromaqueous phase. Series of batch adsorption tests have been performed to evaluate the adsorption capacity ofthe used sorbent. The results demonstrated that both chitosan beads have good potential for adsorbing shortand long chain PFAS from the aqueous phase.
