Abstract:

Chitosan possess effective antimicrobial, hemostatic and wound-healing acceleration properties, which has found wide applications in wound and burn treatment. Chitosan nanofibrous scaffolds produced via electrospinning are architecturally similar to the fibrillar structure of the extracellular matrix that leads to enhancement of cell adhesion and proliferation and also improvement of tissue regeneration. In this article, we reviewed the reports on preparation of electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds of chitosan and composite scaffolds of chitosan and biocompatible polymers. Furthermore, the characteristics of these biomaterials, biological properties of chitosan in combination with biocompatible polymers, behaviors of skin cells on the scaffolds and their effects on the skin regeneration as wound dressings are discussed.
