Numerical investigation of heat transfer and pressure drop in shell tube heat exchanger with double segmental baffle

Abstract:

In this study, a shell-and-tube type heat exchanger with double segmental baffles inside the shell is investigated by numerical simulation (CFD) methods. In the shell of the heat exchanger, the water fluid with a temperature of ۳۰۰ k and a specific mass flow rate is flowing, while the tubes are held steadily at ۴۵۰ K. Additionally, the baffles are located at fixed numbers, heights, and intervals. The results reveal that an increase in the mass flow rate of the water fluid within the shell leads to a direct improvement in heat transfer rates and pressure drops. In this research, for increasing the mass flow rate from ۰.۵ to ۱, ۱.۵ and ۲ kg/s, the heat transfer rate are increased by ۷۹.۷۵%, ۱۴۶.۰۳% and ۲۱۵.۸%, respectively, and the pressure drop are also increased by ۲۹۷.۴۷%, ۸۲۷.۷% and ۱۵۴۱.۸%.
