Distinct element modeling uniaxial compressive testto determine rock micro-mecanical parameters abstract

In order to model fractures in rock structures, distinct element method (DEM) is used.Because this method is based on discontinue environment mechanics, joints and cracks inrock can be simulated. Particle flow code (PFC) is a software was developed by DEM. Itsimulates solid materials by assembling many rigid particles, that input parameters aremicro-mechanical properties of materials. These micro parameters can not be investigatedfrom usual laboratory tests. So, in this study, the applied compressive test on a specimenlimestone was modeled by PFC; the input micro-parameters were changed until themacro-mechanical properties obtained from DEM model matched the estimated data fromthe experimental uniaxial test.
