Navigating Urban Shadows: EXploring Pedestrian Preferences At LiminalPlaces As In-between Spaces

This study explores the complexities of liminal spaces, focusing on entrances that serve as transitional zones within urban environments. It examines the impact of architectural design on pedestrian movement and social interaction. This research aims to understand how cultural thresholds influence pedestrian preferences and social encounters. The key question is: How does the design of these spaces shape movement, attention, and the level of exposure to others? This question is explored through an analysis of movement patterns and social dynamics occurring at cultural thresholds.For this investigation, three culturally significant locations in Istanbul are selected: the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Atatȕrk Cultural Center, and Arter Art Museum. The methodology involves correlating pedestrian preferences with syntactic parameters, examining how the physical configurations of entrances either facilitate or hinder various types of social encounters. The research also considers visitors' spatial experiences and how the overall layout is used, depending on the number of visitors during specific periods.The expected outcome is a deeper understanding of how entrances act as transitional zones, impacting pedestrian behavior and social interaction. By exploring these liminal spaces, this research aims to offer insights into how the design and configuration of cultural thresholds can influence the broader urban experience. Ultimately, this study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the role these in-between spaces play in shaping the flow and atmosphere of urban life.
