Abstract:

This article investigates the intricate link between trauma and political radicalization, offering a comprehensive analysis of how traumatic experiences can predispose individuals to extremist ideologies. Trauma, defined as a response to distressing events that overwhelm an individual's ability to cope, can lead to psychological sequelae such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. These conditions may create a vulnerability to radicalization as individuals seek meaning, belonging, and a mechanism for expressing their distress. The discussion delves into the cognitive and emotional changes following trauma, such as cognitive rigidity and emotional turmoil, which align with the polarized worldviews presented by radical groups. The article also examines the social dynamics at play, including the role of trauma in disrupting social bonds and the subsequent search for a new identity within radical groups that offer a sense of community and purpose. Furthermore, the potential for both personal and collective trauma to be exploited by radical groups is explored, highlighting how these experiences can be framed within a political narrative that justifies extremist behaviour. Empirical studies are reviewed to underscore the correlation between trauma and radicalization, with a focus on the role of the internet in facilitating radicalization among trauma survivors. The article concludes with a discussion on prevention and intervention strategies, emphasizing the need for trauma-informed approaches that address the psychological impact of trauma and the social factors contributing to radicalization. The importance of community engagement, narrative countermeasures, and education in fostering resilience against radical ideologies is also discussed. This research underscores the complexity of the trauma-radicalization nexus and the necessity for multifaceted, evidence-based strategies to prevent the radicalization of individuals affected by trauma.
