Comparative evaluation of maxillary sinus volume at the levels of nasal septal deviation, concha bullosa and impacted or missing teeth in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)

Abstract:

Aims: The maxillary sinuses are the largest paranasal sinuses adjacent to the teeth. Various mechanisms play an important role in the growth of maxillary sinus cavities. This study aimed to compare maxillary sinus volume (MSV) with nasal septal deviation (NSD), concha bullosa (CB) and impacted teeth, and missing teeth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Material aand Methods: This retrospective study conducted on CBCT images of ۱۸۶ patients referring to a radiography center in Yasuj, Iran in ۲۰۲۲-۲۳. Data including age, gender, NSD, and CB, impacted teeth, and missing teeth (premolar and canine) were examined. MSV was measured in the coronary section using the ۳D NNT viewer software. Findings: There were no significant difference between volume of right and left maxillary sinuses (P=۰.۳۵۲). Males had a significantly higher mean MSV than females (P<۰.۰۰۱). There were no significant correlations between MSV and age (r=-۰.۰۶۴; P=۰.۴۹۲). No significant differences were found between MSV in sides of NSD (P=۰.۴۳۳), CB (P=۰.۹۳۳), impacted teeth (P=۰.۸۱۵), and missing teeth (P=۰.۴۹۷) and the opposite side. There was no statistically significant difference between MSV in mild and moderate NSD on the side of the deviation and the opposite side, only in severe nasal septum deviation, the MSV on the side of the deviation was significantly higher than the opposite side (P<۰.۰۰۱). Conclusion: According to our study results, patient's age, NSD, CB, impacted teeth, and missing teeth were not found to be related to MSV. Gender had an effect on MSV and males had higher mean sinus volume than females.
