Novel system to improve the pedestrian protectionin car accident abstract

This study presents and evaluates a new systemto minimize pedestrian injuries in accidents betweenpedestrians and cars. In the developed system, the airbag isplaced under the front bumper, which is managed by theFPGA. This airbag is inflated before a human collides with acar and to be placed between a pedestrian and a car to preventserious injuries that occur to pedestrians. The developedsystem has three steps: a) detection of a pedestrian in front ofthe car, b) detection of pedestrian distance to the car, and c)commanding the airbag compressor according to the carspeed. The system automatically detects a pedestrian in frontof the car by image processing; Simultaneously, sensorsinstalled in the front of the bumper measure the distance ofthe pedestrian to the car. The car speed is then calculated inthe processor. So, if the system detects the pedestrian and alsothe sensors detect the distance of the pedestrian in thedangerous distance range and the car speed is higher than thedefined limit. Then, the processor commands the airbag toopen. The experimental results show that using the developedsystem can provide the advantages such as reducing thepedestrian injuries that can be used for safety of people’s dailylives.
