Effect of weed management strategies on the yield performance of aromatic rice in Boro season

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November ۲۰۱۶ to May ۲۰۱۷ to study the effect of weed management strategies on the yield of aromatic fine rice in Boro season. The experiment comprised three aromatic fine rice varieties viz. BRRI dhan۵۰, BRRI dhan۶۳ and Basmati, and five weed management strategies viz. weedy check (no weeding), two hand weeding at ۱۵ and ۳۰ days after transplanting (DAT), pre-emergence herbicide, Panida ۳۳ EC @ ۲.۵ l ha-۱ + one hand weeding at ۳۰ DAT, post emergence herbicide, Granite ۲۴۰ SC @ ۹۵ ml ha-۱ + one hand weeding at ۳۰ DAT, pre-emergence herbicide, Panida ۳۳ EC @ ۲.۵ l ha-۱ + post emergence herbicide, Granite ۲۴۰ SC @ ۹۵ ml ha-۱. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. BRRI dhan۵۰ produced the highest number of effective tillers hill-۱ (۸.۸۷), number of grains panicle-۱ (۹۵.۵۱ grain) and ۱۰۰۰-grain weight (۲۱.۴۵ g) and straw (۵.۵۹ t ha-۱) yields compared to BRRI dhan۶۳ and Basmati. The highest grain yield (۴.۳۱ t ha-۱) was produced in BRRI dhan۵۰ which was at par with BRRI dhan۶۳ and the lowest one (۳.۲۱ t ha-۱) was recoded in Basmati. In case of weed management, the highest number of effective tillers hill-۱ (۹.۶۲), ۱۰۰۰-grain weight (۲۱.۷۰ g), grain (۵.۲۲ t ha-۱) and straw (۵.۶۴ t ha-۱) yields were obtained in pre-emergence herbicide + post emergence herbicide compared to other treatments. In interaction, the highest grain yield (۵.۵۴ t ha-۱) was obtained in BRRI dhan۵۰ with pre-emergence herbicide + post emergence herbicide, which was statistically identical to BRRI dhan۶۳ with pre-emergence herbicide + post emergence herbicide. Therefore, BRRI dhan۵۰ or BRRI dhan۶۳ can be cultivated with pre-emergence herbicide + post emergence herbicide in Boro season for appreciable grain yields.
