Cinnamomum Burmannii Extract: A Natural Solution for Polymicrobial Biofilm Inhibition and Degradation abstract

Polymicrobial biofilms make diagnosis and treatment difficult, leading to increased mortality. Biofilm colonization of a combination of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Candida albicans can occur on the mucosal surface of the host's nasopharynx, the upper respiratory tract, which can evade the innate immune response. Some clinical evidence shows that nasopharyngeal infections by biofilm microbes are more difficult to eradicate with antibiotics due to the emergence of resistance. It is necessary to develop research on alternative anti-biofilms from herbal ingredients that are safe and easily available. Cinnamomum burmannii contains the active compound cinnamaldehyde as an anti-biofilm. This study aimed to prove the effect of cinnamon stem extract in inhibiting and degrading the biofilm that forms. Using laboratory experiments. The combination of S. pneumoniae and C. albicans was suspended in tryptic soy broth media in a 96-well microplate for 48 hours at 37 °C, each divided into three groups (n=15); biofilm control group, inhibition group, and degradation group. OD measurements using Elisa Reader 595 nm with crystal violet dye. The results OD of the control group biofilm (3.88720 ± 0.109306) were significantly different (P<0.000) from the OD of the inhibition group (1.02613 ± 0.174351) and the OD of the control group and the OD of the degradation group (3.92200 ± 0.014243) did not show a significant difference (P>0.428). The conclusion of this study shows that cinnamon stem extract can inhibit the formation of combined biofilms but cannot degrade biofilms that have already been formed.
