Exploring the Ideal Type of Jewelry in Yazd (IRAN): A Sociological Analysis of High-Karat Gold abstract

The city of Yazd is recognized as a significant center for the production and consumption of jewelry, particularly with the use of 21-karat gold. This study investigates the reasons for the preference for gold and the ideal patterns (typical types) of jewelry in Yazd. Utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods, data were collected from gold and jewelry specialists. The results indicate that cultural, social, and economic factors significantly influence the prevalence of 21-karat gold. Traditional and symbolic beliefs, the social and economic status of individuals, and the high added value of this type of gold are among the primary reasons for this phenomenon. Additionally, consumer preferences and ideal jewelry patterns are influenced by factors such as age, gender, and education level. Research indicates that consumers value flexibility and specific features of chain designs, with this type of gold experiencing high demand at wedding ceremonies. Price fluctuations have minimal impact on demand. Understanding these factors is essential for designers and producers to create products that align with consumer preferences and to develop effective policies in the broader context of gold and jewelry and handicrafts. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the gold market in Yazd and provides stakeholders with strategies to enhance their activities.

مقدمه/پیشینه تحقیق

Previous research on Yezd's jewelry has primarily focused on identifying the characteristics of traditional ornamentation, manufacturing and decoration techniques, and the diversity of designs and motifs. Researchers such as Azizi and Tabatabaei Jabali (2017) have delved into the typology and production methods of Yezd's jewelry, emphasizing the significance of high-karat gold, the variety of designs, and specialized techniques like filigree work.

On the other hand, other researchers like Yazdani-Rad (2019), Ghiasi (2012), and Yaghouti and Dadvar (2018) have explored the history of jewelry in Iran and the influence of cultural and social factors on its design and production. Raei (2014) has also investigated jewelry design patterns from ancient times to the Pahlavi era. However, these studies have largely concentrated on a general overview of Iranian jewelry, providing limited specific information about ancient Yezd jewelry.

The present study indicates that the gold market in Yazd has several key consumer preferences. Consumers prioritize flexibility and tend to choose 21-carat gold. The chain link model enjoys high demand for weddings due to its unique features. Price fluctuations do not significantly impact the demand for chain links. Young consumers display a preference for modern gold designs, with pearls being the second most popular choice among jewelry in this age group. Additionally, the tradition of gold design in Yazd is preserved through the training of new artisans by experienced craftsmen.

Consequently, the findings of this study suggest that the Yazd gold market is characterized by distinct consumer preferences. The preference for 21-carat gold highlights the importance of flexibility for consumers. The popularity of chain link models for weddings emphasizes their unique value proposition. Moreover, the resilience of chain link demand against price fluctuations indicates its strong position in the market. The growing preference for modern gold designs among young consumers reflects a potential shift in taste. The enduring popularity of pearls as the second preferred jewelry item signifies a stable consumer preference. Finally, the transmission of traditional Yazdi gold design knowledge through educational programs ensures the continuation of this cultural heritage. These findings provide valuable insights for businesses operating in the Yazd gold market, enabling them to better tailor their products and marketing strategies to meet consumer preferences.
