The Ideas and Interpretation of the English Translations of Rumi's Poetry Withan Investigation Based on Invalidity of the Retranslations abstract
Experts in the field of literature mentioned retranslation as a positive and inescapable phenomenonin the sphere of literature as it gives several interpretations of the original. Usually, it was linked tothe few outstanding works of literature as the number of the latter was rather limited. Whentranslated, these passages literally generated new retranslations. Theories postulations regardingretranslation that emerged before the 20th century are combined into a single phenomenon known asthe ‘retranslation hypothesis. ’ The hypothesis in question opines that if there are several existingtranslations of a specific piece of text in a particular target language, the following translations arecloser to the original source translation than the preceding ones. Closeness in this case relates tonearness or resemblance in structure changes, inaccuracy or omission, and addition in the translation. This will mean a less distorted version if few changes are made to the text during such a thing. Thisparticular academic paper focuses on some of Rumi’s poems translated into English, aimed to discussa notion of closeness using the framework of documentary and instrumental translation rather thanliteral and free ones. It also focuses on the reasons for retranslation and assesses the extent to whichretranslations facilitate the introduction of the original author to the target audience. The researchstudy aims to investigate to what extent retranslations of Rumi’s poetry represent the lexical andcultural distance from the source text and what has led to such a state, that is, to the retranslation ofRūmī’s poems into English. It is interesting in this regard how the rules of the retranslationhypothesis apply to indirect retranslations.
