A Study on the Effectiveness of Reflection as a Word Learning Strategy onIranian Intermediate EFL Learners' Vocabulary Retention abstract

The importance of language learner strategies and vocabulary knowledge in language learning hasbeen well documented in the first as well as second language research. By contrast, littleinvestigations have been conducted to highlight the role of language learner strategies in theforeign language learning contexts. The experimental study sought to establish the possible effectof reflection as a vocabulary learning strategy on learners’ vocabulary. In so doing, 60 learnerswere selected to participate in this study. The experimental group received instruction in reflectionstrategy for vocabulary while the control group was not instructed through this strategy instructionmethod. Results from descriptive statistics and paired and independent-samples t-tests reflectedthat the experimental group performed significantly better than the control group on vocabularytest which was a testament to the phenomenal success of strategy training for EFL learners. Thefindings were reported and discussed before pedagogical implications and recommendations weremade
