Abstract:
Several studies have recently been conducted in the framework of the direct displacement-baseddesign (DDBD) method for steel structures equipped with fluid viscous dampers. The aim of thesestudies was to optimize the designed structures. The present study intends to investigate theimplementation of modifications proposed by two of the previous studies in the design of mid-risestructures, considering additional details, including the effect of panel zone flexibility as well as thepresence of column splices. To evaluate the performance level of the designed structures, peak interstorydrift ratios (IDRs) and residual inter-story drift ratios (RIDRs) are obtained through nonlineartime history analyses for two seismic hazard levels, involving the design basis earthquake (DBE) andmaximum considered earthquake (MCE). The results show that the structures designed using themodified DDBD method could acceptably meet the performance target IDR limit. Moreover, themedian RIDR values at the DBE level are about ۰.۰۵%.
