PREPARATION OF COBALT NANOPARTICLES FOR SYNTHESIS OF MULTIWALLED CARBON NANOTUBES abstract
Preparation of cobalt nanoparticles from bulk samples using scratch technique is introduced. The prepared cobalt nanoparticles used as metallic catalyst to grow multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Cobalt nanoparticles were prepared by scratching of cobalt wire on sintered alumina plates. With scratching, cobalt nanoparticls and microparticls creates on the surface of alumina plates. The MWCNTs were synthesized using scratched sintered alumina at 950°C. The atmospheric pressure using methane as the precursor gas using thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) applied to grow MWCNTs. Characterization of cobalt nanoparticls and synthesized MWCNTs was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and simultaneous thermal analyser (STA). The results show that the mean diameter of cobalt nanoparticles is 40 nm and exhibit the same crystal structure as the bulk cobalt
