Poverty is one of the most important social problems, whose effects are tangible on various dimensions of individual and social life of people in the society. Among the negative effects of poverty, the emergence of economic and
social crimes is one of its obvious consequences. This article analyzes the relationship between
poverty and the increase of economic and
social crimes in different societies and tries to investigate the relationship between these two phenomena by using different theories of criminology. Research results show that
poverty can directly and indirectly increase the crime rate. In this regard,
economic crimes such as theft, fraud and corruption as well as
social crimes such as domestic violence, fights and murders are prominently related to
poverty and social inequality. Also, this article examines different theories of
criminology such as Merten's anomie theory, social control theory,
poverty culture theory and social inequality theory and has analyzed different aspects of the impact of
poverty on crimes. Finally, by examining the background of the research, the situation of
poverty and crime in Iran has been analyzed and suggestions have been made to reduce the negative effects of
poverty on crimes.
