Bonding Application of Phenolic Resins in Automotive Brake Pads abstract

Phenolic resins are widely recognized as essential binders in automotive brake padapplications due to their superior mechanical and thermal properties. Despite their advantages, these resins exhibit limitations related to their crosslinking mechanisms, curing kinetics, performance attributes, and adhesive strength. This research aims at evaluating the adhesiveproperties of two Resol phenolic resins synthesized over durations of two and four hours. FourierTransform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirmed successful synthesis and chemicalstructure of the resin. Meanwhile, the effect of synthesis time on the tensile shear strength of metallap joints bonded with resol phenolic adhesives was also analyzed. The results indicated that thePF2 and PF4 samples exhibited adhesive strengths of approximately 19.6 MPa and 14.3 MPa atroom temperature, respectively. These findings demonstrate robust adhesion to metal substrates, making them suitable for use in brake pads.
