The Impact of Some Medicinal Plant Extracts and Chemical Inducers to Decrease Rhizoctonia Rot Disease in Faba Beans abstract

The following experiment was conducted to study the efficiency of three medicinal plant extracts (garlic, rosemary, and thyme) and four chemical inducers (salicylic acid, oxalic acid, citric acid, and benzoic acid) against Rhizoctonia solani in faba bean plants. In the laboratory, all examined medicinal plant extracts significantly reduced R. solani linear growth rate. Also, garlic gave a 100% inhibition rate at a concentration of 25%, followed by thyme with an inhibition rate of 72.22% at a concentration of 25%, and rosemary had less effect. Garlic showed a significant decrease, followed by rosemary and thyme, as well as a reduction in fungal development because of chemical inducer therapy. Salicylic acid was the most potent inducer, followed by oxalic acid, while benzoic acid was the least effective. Planting faba bean seeds soaked in medicinal plant extracts or chemical inducers in soil inoculated with R. solani in greenhouses significantly pre- and post-emergence damping-off and increased survival rates compared to the control treatment. The results revealed that the application of medicinal plant extracts and chemical inducers generated a considerable rise in the activity of peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and chitinase enzymes, which play a key role in plant defence mechanisms against pathogen invasion.
