Ensuring Security In Software-Defined Networks abstract
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) redefines network architecture by decoupling the control and data planes, enabling centralized control, programmability, and dynamic policy enforcement. While these features enhance flexibility and resource utilization, they introduce unique security challenges, including vulnerabilities in centralized controllers, communication channels, and programmable interfaces. Traditional distributed security mechanisms are inadequate for addressing these new threats. This paper analyzes SDN security challenges across its application, control, and data planes, categorizing threats such as denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, man-in-the-middle exploits, and risks from malicious applications. It evaluates innovative solutions, including blockchain-based secure communication, AI-driven threat detection, and optimized controller placement. These methods significantly reduce unauthorized access and enhance network resilience, with minimal performance trade-offs.The study integrates quantitative analyses and case studies to assess the effectiveness of these approaches in improving scalability, reliability, and attack mitigation. Findings demonstrate that combining blockchain, AI, and optimized controller placement offers the most comprehensive security framework, mitigating up to 99% of threats while maintaining high network performance.Future research should focus on scalable blockchain solutions, adaptive controller placement, and advanced AI models to address emerging challenges. This work underscores the importance of a holistic approach to securing SDN environments, ensuring their robustness and reliability for modern networking applications.
