The relationship between anxiety and emotion regulation with suicidal thoughts in patients referred to psychiatric hospitals and psychology clinics

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between anxiety and emotion regulation with suicidal thoughts in patients referred to psychiatric hospitals and psychology clinics. This descriptive and correlational study was conducted in ۲۰۲۴ in Zanjan city, and its statistical population included people who had referred to these centers. A sample was selected from ۱۵۰ people using the convenience sampling method. The inclusion criteria for the study included informed consent and complete completion of the questionnaires, while the exclusion criteria included dissatisfaction and incompleteness of the questionnaires. The data were analyzed using SPSS version ۲۶ software, and appropriate statistical tests were used to measure the correlation between the variables. The tools used included the Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and the Suicidality Tendency Questionnaire. The findings showed that the negative correlation between emotion regulation and suicidal thoughts was ۰.۷۴, and the negative correlation between emotion regulation and anxiety was ۰.۷۶. Also, a positive correlation between suicidal thoughts and anxiety was reported to be ۰.۸۴. These values indicate the existence of significant relationships between variables in the sample group, all of which are statistically significant at the ۰.۰۵ level. The results show that a high ability to regulate emotion can reduce the risk of suicidal thoughts, and inability in this area leads to increased anxiety and negative emotions. Therefore, strengthening emotion regulation skills and reducing anxiety through psychological and educational interventions is essential to improve mental health and reduce the risk of suicide.
