Successful experiences in European living labs in using new methods of Nature-based soil and water conservation abstract

Our research stems from initial studies on woody crops, especially in vineyards and soil erosion conducted at multiple European sites. By closely examining these diverse environments, we comprehensively understood the complex processes driving soil and water losses in viticulture. Based on these findings, we believe a holistic soil management approach is essential for developing effective and sustainable erosion control strategies. To this end, we propose a novel research model that integrates physical, human, and regional geography expertise, among other relevant disciplines such as geomatics, soil sciences, agronomy, and hydrology. As a second step, we established a living lab (www.egemap.eu) in the province of Granada to ground-truth our findings. Here, we employed the improved stock unearthing method, rainfall simulations, infiltration measurements, soil moisture and temperature sensors, soil property analyses, and drone and satellite imagery (from 2022) to assess erosion patterns and camera traps to study the relationship between grape variety, avifauna, and soil biodiversity. Subsequently, we monitor land degradation and possible nature-based solutions in detail. Preliminary results underscore the need for continued investigation to identify consistent trends and develop a unified framework for supporting the viticulture sector. Combining our findings, we aim to create a comprehensive strategy for mitigating soil erosion in vineyards.
