Agroforestry systems as a nature-based solution for improving household economy abstract

Nature-based solutions cover a wide range of actions to maintain and strengthen ecosystem services that underpin agricultural productivity and resilient food production. One of the specific nature-based approaches is agroforestry systems. About 30% of the world's rural population, or 46% of total farmlands, uses trees in this system. Tree-based agricultural systems are currently being promoted in many parts of the world, and their economic importance has been emphasized in different regions. Therefore, this study aims to determine the woody species planted in the different agroforestry systems and their role in improving the household economy of local communities in Northwest Iran. Data were collected by field observations, informal discussion, and focus group discussion (FGD). Based on our initial observations, some woody species planted in the agroforestry system were walnut (Juglans regia), cornelian cherry (Cornus mas), mulberry (Morus alba), sumac (Rhus coriaria), and redcurrant (Ribes biebersteinii). These species were used in different agroforestry systems, for example, walnut and cornelian cherry (agrisilviculture), mulberry (sericulture), sumac (silvopasture), and redcurrant (homegardens). In addition, the species that have changed due to climate changes were determined in this research. The potential of agroforestry will only unfold when the barriers to implementation are addressed through the most efficient solutions. The recognition of agroforestry as a mitigation strategy under the Kyoto Protocol has improved its appreciation as an adaptation strategy of local communities.
