Aquaporin-4 (AQP-4) Plasma Expression in NaCl 3% and Mannitol 20% on Tumor Craniotomy abstract

Aquaporin-4, a protein found on the end-feet of astrocytes, is a key player in water movement across cellular membranes. It is a homo-tetramer structure, with each monomer serving as an individual water channel. It may also contribute positively to cell adhesion and the formation of glial scars following brain tumor. The aberrant levels of AQP4 resulted in the loss of hippocampus neurons, the destruction of the hippocampal structure, and the impairment of hippocampal neuronal function. Moreover, its level exhibited a strong correlation with the severity of brain edema and impaired memory storage in rats. Brain tumor with craniotomy often leads to neurodegenerative characteristics, such as neurofibrillary tangles and Aβ amyloid aggregation. Therefore, aquaporin-4 is essential for the oedema process observed in various brain pathologies and its modulation is significant for recovery during the acute phase following cerebral oedema. This review article will discuss about role of AQP-4 in cerebral edema related brain tumor craniotomy.
