The application of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) in the treatment of breast cancer abstract
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and is the second leading cause of cancer in women. Breast cancer treatment is a major issue in both developing and developed countries. The clinical use of ultrasound for cancer is not only diagnostic but also therapeutic. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive treatment that completely coagulates and necroses tumors in deep tissues through intact skin. The purpose of this review was to investigate the use of HIFU in the treatment of breast cancer using the PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases from 2000 to 2023. This study demonstrated that HIFU has been developed as a non-invasive ablation treatment for both benign and malignant breast tumors. In addition, HIFU should be further developed through large-scale prospective clinical trials to confirm the effectiveness of HIFU compared to other cancer treatment methods such as surgery, radiotherapy, gene therapy, and chemotherapy.
