Anti-inflammatory compounds of medicinal plants: a systematic review abstract

Although various drugs are currently used to reduce pain and treat inflammation, certain compounds derived from medicinal plans have demonstrated a strong ability to regulate inflammatory responses. The purpose of this review is to explore the role of dietary ant-inflammatory compounds in inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulating inflammatory signalling pathways. These findings indicate that conventional drugs used to manage pain and reduce inflammation specifically inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines or particular signalling pathways. However, due to the involvement of different cytokines and signalling pathways in the inflammatory process, this pharmaceutical approach not able to complete effective. In contrast, certain dietary compounds such as polyphenols, phytosterols, terpenoids, specific fatty acids, and specific mineral elements, not only suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulate inflammation signalling pathways but also offer the advantage of being free from the side effects commonly associated with conventional medications. Remarkably, polyphenols are highly diverse and can be found in a wide range of food sources, including seeds, fruits, medicinal plants and spices. Terpenoids are also abundant in the mint family, especially in rosemary, thyme, and lavender. Rice bran and borage seeds are excellent sources of phytosterol and anti-inflammatory fatty acids, respectively.
