Examining the Role of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis in Regulating Physiological Responses in Stress-Related Disorders abstract

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is recognized as one of the primary physiological systems regulating the body's response to stress, and its dysfunction can lead to various psychological and physiological disorders. This review study aims to examine the role of the HPA axis in stress-related disorders and its impact on bodily functions. The main hypothesis is that an imbalance in HPA axis function can contribute to the development of disorders such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and Cushing’s syndrome. To investigate this issue, data from previous studies on HPA axis function and its association with stress-related disorders were collected and analyzed. The findings indicate that the HPA axis plays a direct role in regulating the body's stress responses, and dysfunction in this system can lead to increased cortisol levels, resulting in physiological changes such as elevated blood pressure, mood disturbances, metabolic disorders, and immune system dysfunction. Furthermore, treatments aimed at regulating the HPA axis, including cortisol-modulating medications, psychotherapy techniques, and lifestyle modifications, can help mitigate the negative effects of chronic stress. This study suggests that a better understanding of HPA axis regulation mechanisms and the development of targeted treatments can enhance the management of stress-related disorders and improve patients' quality of life.
