Cytotoxic Activity of Xanthones from Garcinia parvifolia Miq. abstract

Garcinia parvifolia Miq, a Clusiaceae family plant, is a cooking spice and traditional herbal medicine. Xanthones, bioactive compounds, and chemical markers found in abundance in Garcinia plants are known for their cytotoxic activity as promising candidates for cancer therapy. Information on the structure-activity relationship of xanthones against breast cancer (4T1) and melanoma cells (B16F10) is limited. This study aims to find the potential of xanthones from G. parvifolia Miq. stem bark against melanoma and breast cancer cells. Three xanthone derivatives, rubraxanthone, α-mangostin, and xanthone I, were isolated from G. parvifolia. The molecular structures of xanthones were determined and focused using 1D and 2D NMR spectra. Three xanthones were assayed for breast cancer (4T1) and melanoma cells (B16F10). Rubraxanthone exhibited an IC50 value of 10.96 μM, which was moderate activity against 4T1 cells; α-mangostin and xanthone I were inactive, and against B16F10 cells; all of the isolated were inactive.
