The Impact of Technology on Narrative in Contemporary Novels abstract
The rapid advancement of technology has significantly influenced narrative forms, themes, and techniques in contemporary fiction. This essay explores how digital messaging, interactive storytelling, and artificial intelligence (AI) have reshaped modern novels, transforming both narrative structure and reader engagement. Technology serves as a narrative device in contemporary fiction, with novels incorporating electronic communication such as emails, SMS, and social media to develop characters and plots. Examples include Jennifer Egan’s "A Visit from the Goon Squad" (2010), which features a PowerPoint-style chapter, and Dave Eggers’ "The Circle" (2013), which critiques surveillance culture and identity control. Hypertext fiction and interactive narratives also redefine storytelling by allowing non-linear, reader-driven experiences. Michael Joyce’s "12 Blue" (1996) uses hyperlinked text, while Mark Z. Danielewski’s "House of Leaves" (2000) employs alternative formats to create immersive reading environments. AI and virtual consciousness are growing themes in fiction, as seen in Kazuo Ishiguro’s "Klara and the Sun" (2021) and Richard Powers’ "The Overstory" (2018), which explore AI’s ethical and emotional implications. Moreover, books like William Gibson’s "Pattern Recognition" (2003) and David Shields’ "Reality Hunger" (2010) blur the line between fiction and reality. Ultimately, technology continues to redefine literature, shaping both storytelling and interpretation.
